This is a favorite photo of me and my Eric. It was taken in Donegal, Ireland at my brother and sister in laws wedding. How time flies. We had such a great trip to Europe that summer. Eric and I loved exploring and I am so grateful for our many adventures.

Thank you for showing me the world Eric.

While I have loved the blogging world, I know that for me, right now, I need to focus on my own healing since Eric as passed away. Our sons too are grieving and they need me more now than ever. So friends, it's time to retire a spoonful of dish. Thanks for being a friend. I'll see you around.

With much love, this update is by Rita Baumgartner (Sarah's sister in-law, married to Eric's brother, Marc).

We never expected to write this so soon, but wanted to update all of those who have loved and supported Eric and Sarah so much during this difficult, but brave battle with cancer. Eric went peacefully with Sarah and Marc holding his hands and talking gently to him yesterday evening just after 7.00pm.

After being admitted to the hospital a couple of weeks ago in hopes of having surgery that would make him more comfortable and prolong his time with us, Eric's surgery last Tuesday brought unfortunate news. The surgeons could not even attempt to remove the tumors or any part of them as his cancer had advanced so rapidly and completely that it was too dangerous to remove them. Dr. Nakakuru (his surgeon) informed us after the surgery and confirmed that there were no treatment options left for him. Eric came around from surgery and was his old self, so happy to see his family. On hearing the news the next morning, Eric arrested and had to be intubated (put on a breathing machine). He was taken to ICU where he remained until last night. Eric was able to wake from sedation twice a day, so his Mom, Dad, close family members and good friends were able to spend a few precious minutes with him. Although Eric was intubated, he was aware and responsive with blinking, gesturing and even some writing during the times he awoke from sedation. Sarah and Marc cherished every single second and got to tell him everything in their hearts. While Marc and Sarah spent pretty much every minute in his ICU room, his sisters & brother in law kept a 24 hour vigil in the waiting room, sleeping on a hard floor for a few hours each night just so they could remain close to him. Although our hearts are breaking, it's comforting to know Eric knew he was surrounded by family, good friends and much love.

We will have a memorial service for Eric on Saturday, 23 July to remember the wonderful husband, father, son, brother, friend he was to all of us. Please see details below:

The support and love he and his family received through this very difficult time has made a huge difference. Sarah and their boys will need our support for many years to come. We look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday to celebrate Eric's life. Knowing him made us all better people.

a month ago i bought this dress on roxy. within 24 hours i was informed it was out of stock. ugh.

earlier this week i was online and decided to see if the dress was back in stock on roxy. no luck. so i googled it and up popped sports chalet. they had this beauty in stock so i snagged one quick. i love it's casual bohemian feel. during summer i prefer dresses to shorts. i really don't like to wear shorts.

if you're still with me, great. thanks too for sticking with me during my blog dry spell. everyone tells me i cannot lose site of my outside interests. it's easy to say when your husband isn't the one fighting cancer. love them for encouraging me though.

Today my Harper's Bazaar arrived in the mail and I was pleasantly surprised to see Britney Spears on the cover. She is looking gorgeous in this Dolce & Gabbana star gown. Don't cha think?

Her summer tour kicks off in Sacramento, CA which I am right next to so I debating if me and my sistas should go. The tickets are a bit high so I can't decide.

Recently I purchased the pottery barn kids book kids' rooms and it is filled with creative ideas for decorating your kids rooms, similiar to the abc wall. If you are on the hunt for a book about kids spaces then I highly recommend this book.

We had a great Memorial Day Weekend. You? We had family in town which kept us busy and distracted. The boys loved playing with their cousins and I got to fit in some girl time with my sis in law at a local wine bar. It was yummy wine, delicious cheese and great company. Thanks Rita!

Also, this weekend my hubs and his bro launched our boat and parked her in her new home, the dock at Browns Ravine at Folsom Lake. It only took 5 1/2 years of waiting for this spot but we are beyond excited to be able to use our boat this summer since it will be so much easier.

Since the weather has been a bit chilly we all didn't go out on the boat with the kids but will soon.

A quick trip

Here's the view from our hotel room at the Marriot in Salt Lake City, Utah.

We are here for my hubbies work, he's participating in a trade show and I tagged along. I got to help work the booth yesterday which I actually enjoyed. Following the show we had a quick break to change then headed to the Market Street Grill in downtown Salt Lake. It was good and the strawberry shortcake was so yummy!
We leave tomorrow and although I've enjoyed our trip, I cannot wait to get home to our boys. A big thanks to grandma for watching them and making sure they are having a blast.

Only bummer of the trip, I was hoping to visit Alice Lane Home but discovered that it is in Orem Utah. Maybe next time.

The other day while browsing online through Calico Corners I came across this gorgeous Ikat print fabric and decided it is the perfect fabric for my chairs. I have been wanting to make slipcovers for awhile but didn't know what fabric to do it with and now I know. I love the idea of being able to wash them because as most know things get dirty especially with kids. I have been loving this table for a while but didn't feel that it would ever work in my current home. But since we are moving soon, I think in a smaller kitchenette this table is the perfect compliment and affordable. A few pops of yellow pillows are a fun addition as well as good back support. As for the table scape, I find this flatware caddie rustic yet functional and perfect for indoor or outdoor entertaining. I love me some tea in the summer and this white drink dispenser is a much needed addition to easy entertaining. As for a center piece, this galvanized metal 3-tier stand is chic yet practical and makes it easy for all to grab a snack and go. I am a sucker for seasonal dinnerware and the Calypso Target collection is no exception. These tumblers are beautiful with their trio of colors and the plates are whimsy and durable which is a must for young families.

I have been wanting to share some news with you all but hadn't been able to until now. If you've followed my blog for awhile then you know that my husband Eric was diagnosed with cancer back in February of 2010. Following surgery and six months of chemotherapy, we were told in November of 2010 that Eric was cancer free with a 50-90% chance of his cancer not returning (depending on which oncologist you spoke to). Fast forward to March of 2011, Eric hadn't been feeling well and was having unusual pain. Due to this, his oncologists decided to push his PET/CT scan and other tests forward to find out what was causing his pain. The results were shocking. In a few short months they found that Eric's cancer had in fact metastasized and was in his small intestine, stomach, colon and peritoneum.

Within days of this news and visits to his oncologists at Stanford and UCSF, Eric's doctors recommended chemotherapy for three months followed by another round of scans to see if his chemotherapy is working. If the chemotherapy proves to be working then he will continue on his current course of treatment with Flofiri (leucovorin/fluorouracil/irinotecan) and Avastin (Bevacizumab).
If it is not working then they are going to treat his cancer like you would pancreatic cancer since it has shown to be effective for patients where the colorectal treatment proves ineffective. Eric has Duodenal Cancer of the Small Intestine which is very rare therefore there is not an exact treatment for it.

To date, Eric has completed five rounds of his chemotherapy with his sixth round starting tomorrow. Again, following this round we'll know more which we hope and pray will be that his tumors are shrinking and the chemotherapy is doing it's job.
As for how my hubbie is doing.... this round of chemotherapy has proven much harder with crappy side effects, basically the scariest thing imaginable (to quote my hubbie).
So, I ask that you please pray for my husband Eric. Please pray that his tumors are shrinking. Please pray for his continued strength and will.

a day in monterey

Recently we spent some time in Monterey California. We stayed at the Plaza Hotel which was luxurious and relaxing. We strolled on the beach and played in the sand. Of course we visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The boys loved every minute of it. It was a perfect mini break for our little family.

a lamp reborn

A few weeks ago I showed you a lamp that I had purchased from a local thrift store. It needed a new shade to modernize it and after much debate I decided on one from the Pottery Barn found here.
Here is the before:

the shade is the bleached Burlap Tapered Drum Lamp Shade from Pottery Barn.

I purchased the a medium sized shade for $49 bucks. Not bad considering the lamp base was only $15. Bringing my grand total to $65 bucks.

This is the lamps home for now but I am sure I'll move it around until I find the perfect fit.

Darlings, I hope you are all having a fantastic week. Our little family spent the weekend in Monterey and had so much fun. More on our trip tomorrow with pics. Now that we are back home, me and the boys have caught colds. Luckily dad has been spared.

I failed to mention Saturday was my birthday!

My mom in law brought by my cake, it had skiis on it... Fitting for this post I thought.

In yesterday's post I mentioned that I would post pictures of our trip to Lake Tahoe, Nevada today. Lake Tahoe is our go to spot to ski and enjoy the great outdoors. Lately we've been traveling to Northstar Ski Resort. We rented a cabin via VRBO and had such a great experience. If you click on VRBO or here you can catch a glimpse of the cabin we rented. It was clean and very comfortable and I know I can speak for the entire family, we would rent it again.

This past Saturday was my birthday.... How old do you think I turned? Ah, I wouldn't do that to you. I am now 35 and I am feeling a lil bit older friends. Before I was in my early 30's and now I am in my mid. It hurts a bit but I am loving my 30's and who I have become and hope to continue to be.

We've been spending a lot of time with our family lately. Two weekends ago we rented a cabin with some of them and got in much needed family time. We talked, ate, drank and chilled in the hot tub. Here are some snapshots of the cousins playing. Thanks to Auntie Mary who watched the kids so we could enjoy an afternoon together in the Villages at Northstar Ski Resort. Eric and I shopped and ate while the others skied. A great trip indeed, more on it tomorrow.

Urban Home

Through blogging I have discovered what it means to make something old new. I used to buy everything new and while I still do for certain pieces, I am open to revamping a old piece of furniture and making it my own. A local shop, Urban Home, actually it's about an hour away from me in Berkeley, is a favorite of mine. They have modern pieces paired with traditional as well as a fantastic inventory. Here are some pieces I have my eye on.

my gold beauty

Recently I picked up this gold beauty at my local thrift shop for $15. After a bit of a polish and new shade it'll look great. Not bad I think, considering this beauty retails for a whopping $519. They look pretty close right?

Since my purchase I have been on the hunt for the perfect shade. Lately I am leaning towards a black shade although I have not been able to locate a black shade except at Target, but it's not the right fit. Any suggestions? I might take the original shade, remove the accordion looking cover and then with what's left over, glue on some black fabric with trim.

Last night I was a bit bored watching the Oscars. Billy Crystal was the highlight for me because he was funny and showed what a great performer and host he is. The Oscars needed a Billy last night not Ann and James, sorry guys!
Following the Oscars the hubs and I watched Jimmy Kimmel and I am so glad we did. This show was better than the Oscars. Tom Hanks was a guest and did a little video about Nevada's Sexy Baby Contest. Watch it my friends, it is laugh out loud funny!

Hi Friends... Please pardon my absence here at my lil old blog these last few days. I've had a lot on my mind. One year ago today my husband Eric was diagnosed with cancer. Whew I said it. It's hard saying those words still and even writing them. At times I cannot believe what a year it has been and I am in awe of Eric for what he has endured. Cancer is no picnic folks, it sucks as well as sucks the life out of you, literally. So, today I am grateful for my husband, my little boys and each day we have to share together. I am looking forward to the future and trying with all my will to not always look to the past. It's much easier said than done, trust me. As I was looking for a picture to share with you all I stumbled upon pictures of Eric from when we first realized something was really wrong with him, to the day of his surgery. Here is the timeline.. It might seem long but it wasn't.

Tuesday, February 16th - Eric to the ER as he was no longer able to hold down food and was only able to eat liquids and his vomiting had become severe and very painful. The ER doctor was amazing. He called a local gastroenterologist and informed him about Eric and asked that he see him first thing the next day.
Wednesday, February 17th - We meet the wonderful Dr. R who ordered an immediate group of tests, endoscopy/colonoscopy.
Thursday, February 18th - Eric has his procedures started but under conscious sedation. He ended up being a danger to himself and the doctor so they could not complete the exam. Another appointment was scheduled where he could be heavily sedated. We both found this rather funny....
Friday, February 19th - Eric now under complete sedation, Dr. R is able to perform the said procedures at our local hospital.
Monday, February 22nd - Eric's local oncologist (Dr. J) who we have yet to meet has him have a CT scan at our local hospital.
Monday, February 22nd - Eric's gastroenterologist (Dr. R) calls our home number at about 5 pm and tells me over the phone his findings from the endoscopy that he found a cancerous mass in the first part of the small intestine the duodedum. After I speak with Dr. R I go to Eric's office at our home and tell him he has cancer.
Tuesday, February 23rd - We meet with Dr. R and go over the results and he suggests that we go out of the area to find an oncologist who can perform the surgery that he thinks will be necessary. He then works with Dr. J who finds Dr. N.
Tuesday, February 23rd - We get the call from Dr. N that they'd like Eric to come to San Francisco the next day to meet Dr. N a surgical oncologist who specializes in Eric's very rare cancer.
Wednesday, February 24th - We head out to UCSF, Heller Diller Cancer Center to meet the much esteemed Dr. N. We meet Dr. N and after reviewing Eric's slides he is concerned that Eric could go into cardiac arrest since his mass is blocking so much of his intestine. By this day, Eric could no longer keep water down. He wanted Eric to go to surgery right then and check himself in. Eric asked if we could go home and spend a few hours with our boys. He gave us the green light of about 12 hours, so we headed home, talked with the boys who were confused and sad like any 2 and 3 year old would be. The we packed up everything we would need for a few weeks at the hospital.
Thursday, February 25th - Eric and I head into San Francisco for his surgery to remove his cancer.
Thursday, February 25th - late afternoon, after a 6 plus hour surgery Eric is wheeled into his room. Eric's surgery was a success. Dr. N removed his cancerous mass, 12 inches of his small intestine and 9 lymph nodes where the cancer had spread.
Eric's recovery was really hard on him and us actually but in the end we powered on and are stronger for it. Towards the end of March we met with two oncologists Dr. C from UCSF and Dr. F from Stanford to get the course of treatment they believed that Eric should follow now that he was finished with his surgery.
They both agreed that Folfox (leucovorin, fluorouracil, oxaliplatin) would be his chemotherapy drugs and he would receive 12 cycles over 6 months. During his chemotherapy, Eric had to visit the ER several times from side effects of the chemotherapy, the scariest being a pulmonary embolism.
In October Eric finished his chemotherapy and he has been slowly getting back to normal. Although he has some challenges still, his fingers and toes are numb from the neuropathy from his chemotherapy as well as a few other things. For the next four years Eric will continue to be monitored by his doctors every few months through blood work, CT scans and a other various tests. That being said his cancer journey is just that, a journey.
I know, it's a lot of information but I felt compelled to share it today, whoops I am past midnight now.

On a side note, the above picture was taken of Eric and I on our last trip to Donegal, Ireland. It is a beautiful county and country and we were so taken with the beauty as well as the people. This year I am going to post a bit on our travels as Eric had I have really seen the world these last few years and we hope in the coming years to see even more of it.
Thanks for being so great everyone out there reading my lil old blog. I know this is a heavy post and get it if you don't want to know all this stuff but I needed to share this post today. I hope to not have much to say about it in the future as Eric continues to remain cancer free. Although I do plan on posting about people and their families who are growing through cancer and blog about it. It's always good to raise awareness because we can all forget other's realities if we aren't faced with them.
So go and hug your babies, your hubbie or your boyfriend, whoever and remember to be enjoy each new day.

Which brings me to deals... Since it's Presidents weekend all the retailers are offering sales. While I love a good deal, I am skipping the sales this weekend. Are you off to the sales or shopping online?

So I have to share why my post is late today. Well, last night the fam and I headed to San Francisco to have dinner with family. Since we didn't arrive until 7pm we ate in. I must say that eating-in in San Francisco isn't bad. We had delicious Indian food. My sweet sis-in-law purchased my favorite white wine of the moment Riva Ranch by Wente. It is buttery and smooth. If you like wine, try it. After a splendid evening, the hubs and I and our two boys headed home.

First up for today was a play-date with my friend Jamie. Since the boys and I slept in (sorry Eric you had to get up at 6 am) we had no time to eat at home so we headed over to Starbucks. My drink of choice a skinny caramel macchiato, yummy. Then the boys and I stopped off at my favorite cupcake shop, Icing on the Cupcake. I had to bring Jamie and her family treats because they spoil us whenever we visit. Of course I purchased extra cupcakes to take home for a treat. After our fun we headed home to rest and rest we did.

Okay, back to these shoes, I am loving wedges. They are my "right now" shoe. I purchased shoe 2 a few weeks back and I feel tall and sassy in them. Do you like?

I am in love this Alicia and Olivia dress, in love! As a busy mom to two tots, I am all about cute and comfy clothes and this look screams Sarah (that's me). Dresses and denim jackets paired with flats are a wardrobe staple for me. Living in California allows me to dress this way year round and I wouldn't have it any other way. How was your weekend friends? Ours was fantastic! We played all day Saturday and enjoyed the sunny California weather. Sunday was equally fun although I spent most the time indoors sprucing up our house. I decided to spruce up the shelves in our family room since they have acted as a catch all for pictures, toys, diapers and junk for the past year. With zero money and only items I had at home I did the impossible (or so I thought) and transformed these drab shelves to fab (at least in my mind). What do you think? Any space in your house you're are sick of and is need of a makeover?

If you noticed on this last photo, I resorted to displaying some of my cook books since I ran out of regular books. They work now although in time I plan on adding more art, travel, fashion and design books.

Also, after reviewing my pictures I have realized that I really need to learn how to use my camera. Any tips on how to use a Canon Power Shot SX10IS?

It's been clear to me for a few weeks now that I have been lacking inspiration. With our New Year not beginning like I had hoped I have been a little down but am trying hard to pick myself up. One thing that helps this momma out is shopping. I know it's such a cliche but a true one for me. So while Jake was at preschool yesterday Ryan and I headed over to Anthropologie. Off of our master bedroom is our retreat/on suite/extra space, whatever you wanna call it. Initially we had nothing in this room. When the hubs got sick, we decided to make it an office so he could work out of the house vs his casita which is on our property but separate from the house. His office became our office, mine really because I am the one who uses it now. It is my little place to enjoy. I blog here and shop (I am being honest). Although in the near future it will be my work office as I ease back into the work world.

Since the retreat had become an office we had been discussing it acting as a gym as well. Although we belong to a gym we don't love going to it anymore so we thought a home gym would do the trick. Today our newest addition arrived, our treadmill. She is a beauty folks. She is strong, sturdy and big. The treadmill is from Sports Authority and is the brand Freemotion. I did not research treadmills, the hubs did and this is the one he wanted. It's features are amazing with a fan, speeds up to 12 miles an hour (don't worry I won't ever run that fast), incline +/- (meaning it inclines forward and back). If that isn't cool enough it has an TV screen were I can watch TV, plug in my ipad, iphone, ifit built in (so I can work out with Jillian Micheals) and google maps. The google maps is such an awesome feature. Why? Say you want to run the New York Marathon, the google maps will display the run as it would be during the marathon so you can train for it in your home. I cannot wait to start using our treadmill. I'll let you know if she is a keeper. Do you work out at the gym or home?

On a side note, I am really looking forward to the weekend. Jake's birthday party with his buddies is tomorrow and Sunday we have a birthday for one of our close friends kiddos followed by family visiting for dinner. A busy weekend but lots of fun. Too fast

My baby boy, well he's not "technically" a baby anymore but will always be in my eyes, turned 4 years old yesterday. It's hard to see him grow up so fast. I remember the day he was born, the first time I held him and when we took him home. As I look back through the years I am in awe. I know that he is becoming an amazing little man and will one day be a great man too. He is my blue eyed, brown haired, loving boy who makes me laugh and smile everyday and swells my heart with love.

I love you Jake.

This weekend we ate and by eating I mean the bad stuff. I finally decided to whip out my new Kitchen Aid mixer that the hubs got me for Christmas and I must say that I am in LOVE. It's amazing and I now see why it's so popular. Since I was so inspired, I decided to first make homemade pumpkin ice cream. My goodness it was better than pumpkin pie. I figured that pumpkin ice cream while delicious itself needed to feel a bit pie like so I made homemade whip cream and added some graham crackers to the bottom of the bowl. To top off our dessert I added a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Pure bliss!

The next morning we had left over whip cream so I thought I'd make my wee boys a treat. They loved it as much as I loved making it for them. I would call it dressed up waffles.

Side note, we only do sweet breakfasts once on the weekend.

The weather out here is California is unusually warm so as much as I am sad to see the rain and cold go (for now at least) I am embracing the warmer days. The hubs and I along with our boys played outside all weekend and it was such fun. In addition to playing, we shopped a bit which led us to our favorite local nursery Bushnell Gardens as well as Pottery World. Why? Well, we are on a hunt for a few finishing touches to our backyard redo. The right side of our house needs three pots as well as three trees. We are pretty much decided on the above pot and the olive tree (without olives). The water feature will be for the courtyard and placed on the casita wall (where the hubs office is). I'll post pics this week of our backyard before and after (up to now).

On Sunday while eating (again an eating packed weekend) at the yummy Mesquite, the fam and I watched the Chicago Bears vs. the GreenBay Packers. My goodness I was jumping out of my seat, literally. I thought Chicago might have a chance but in the end their QB kept giving away the ball. Seriously, I counted four interceptions but I am sure there were more. Anyone know? The pic above is of my sis Gracie (a chicago resident) and her man Dirk at yesterday's game. They were lucky enough to score tickets. I must say I cracked up at the martini glasses. When I think of football I think beer but I guess times are changing.

Side note, last week while at Ikea I spotted this white fridge and became smitten. I know you're thinking what, white. Yes, white for my garage that is. This white fridge is the nicest one I've ever seen and at the listed price, a gem. Although while searching online the price came up as very different so I am a bit confused. Luckily, I am not buying a fridge yet for my garage (just dreaming of one at the moment for extra food storage).

Also, I purchased the Creative, Inc. on Amazon three days ago, on sale for $11.40 and it arrived that quick. I love Amazon and if you can believe it only recently discovered it.

I don't know about you all but the weather out here in Northern California is pretty perfect. It's in the high 50's and sunny. The boys (despite their colds) played away most of the day outside. The highlight for this mama, hunting for lizards, who woulda thought I'd be doing that again.

The last two days I have been cleaning my house from top to bottom. Since the holidays I have felt that it needed a good scrub and had been too ~~lazy~~ busy to get around it to. Today my focus is on the kitchen. My kids sippy cups, bowls, plates, and toys are overwhelming me and I am purging big time. Also, I am organizing it all too so my label maker is being used for the first time since Christmas (thanks Jiann for my fantastic gift).

Since the hubs has been out of town for the last week, I am happy to report that he'll be coming home to a clean and fresh smelling house. Although, do you ever notice once you start cleaning you end up making a bigger mess than before?

Natalie Portman or is it her adorable baby bump she's sporting. Regardless, Natalie was positively glowing in this pink empire-waist gown by Viktor & Rolf with rose detail, matching clutch and Tiffany jewels. The only miss for me was the hair as it was somewhat cone like in back. In addition to this winning look, Natalie took home the Best Actress award for Black Swan. I guess it's time to see the movie as I am sure she'll now win the Oscar too since a Globe and Oscar win go hand in hand (most of the time anyway).

Fashion is on my mind lately, a lot. Until recently, I had only discovered Design blogs. Now that I have discovered Fashion Blogs, I am smitten. Some of the ladies in the blog world are seriously stylish!!! I've decided that as one who has always adored fashion, even studied it in college, that I must step up my game (in the wardrobe dept). While I am not sure about picture posts of me in outfits, maybe I can figure something else out. I tried having the hubs take my pictures last Saturday night and they were not worthy of a post. I loved my outfit but I am not a model and did not do myself or my outfit any justice.

Lately, I am loving the looks of Lauren Conrad. I will admit I've been a fan since the OC, originally because I grew up there. Then, I followed the Hills but only because it was about Lauren studying fashion and interning at some pretty amazing jobs, hello Teen Vogue. Now that Lauren has a series of fiction books, a style book, and a fashion line at Kohl's, I guess she is being taken seriously and should be. This weekend went by in a flash. My bestie was in town for the afternoon on Saturday so we caught up over lunch at Jack's Urban Eats. Following lunch, my son Jake had a birthday party for a preschool friend so off to Bounce O Palace we went. Ryan came along and he had a blast although he didn't jump in the bouncy house. On Sunday we took the fam to Chuck e cheese. I haven't been there in over 10 years. We all had a good time playing games and eating pizza. Sunday afternoon I got a get out of the house card and headed to the movies where I watched Country Strong. Good movie but sad, really sad. The music is catchy and I've already bought three tunes from the Album.

Following my afternoon free of kids, my hubs lil sis's dropped by on their way through town. Which led us to dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Whew, a busy weekend but lots of time spent with family and friends was just what the doctor ordered.

It's late and I can't sleep. Today I learned that our friend Pete died of cancer. He fought a long and hard fight this past year. I am honored to know him and to be able to call him a friend. Pete and my husband Eric bonded during chemotherapy at Doctor J's over their mutual admiration of The Home Depot. These two men discussed how they wanted to finish their backyards so their wives wouldn't be left with a mess if they died. I cry every time Eric tells me that, one because no one should have to think that and two because they did. Pete was a husband, father and a friend. His larger than life personality was intoxicating as were his stories. Pete definitely told a good story.
A week before Christmas I ran into Pete's wife Missy at Costco were we discussed the lunch our husbands had planned for us all the following Tuesday. Tuesday came and while my mom watched our boys, Eric and I headed to lunch to meet our friends. We arrived around 11:30 am and waited for Pete and Missy to arrive. After a bit, we decided to be seated and wait for them at the table. We called Pete, texted Pete and no response. Eric paced and walked around looking for them while I waited in the restaurant. Once we realized they weren't coming I cried and Eric was shook up. We knew that we wouldn't see Pete again and it hurt. On the way home that afternoon we decided to drop off the wine that we had brought for Pete and Missy at their home. Eric went up to the door and placed the wine on the ground and when he looked up there was a sign on their door that read "FOR PETE'S SAKE, DON'T KNOCK"! Always a joker.
Pete you will be missed and remembered always. I know that you are smiling and laughing way up there.
See you again someday.

Style Files - Resort

Every year around this time the hubs and I are busily planning our trip to the Bahamas in February. Due to a tumultuous 2010 we won't be vacationing quite yet but I am dreaming of days spent at The Cove Atlantis in the Bahamas. To me, it is the ultimate vacation. Sophisticated and luxurious coupled with family fun. Delicious food is abundant with the world's top chef's preparing it all. When you stay at The Cove you are treated to private pools that are literally steps from the beach. For the kids, there is an amazing water park, dolphin cay, and marine habitat. They'll have so much fun they'll never want to leave. Although a holiday is not in the works, I am still on the hunt for Resort Wear. When I am lounging by the pool I like a chic comfy look. Oh and good book and a pina colada!

The New Year has ushered in my desire to cook. When I mean cook, I mean really cook. For example, the Roast Chicken above. Before 2011, I would have bought this baby in the grocery store all warmed and ready for me to serve. Post 2011, I brought home an uncooked chicken, used parts of Barefoot Contessa's New Cookbook "How Easy is That" and My First Ever Roast Chicken. It was delicious, moist and I could actually distinguish the flavors. Yum!

The Finishing Touches

Here are the finishing touches for our home this Christmas. I wanted to incorporate more color but ending up with mostly red, green, white and gold accents. I posted here about a wreath I planned on making but ran out of time so I came up with the above. As for the bow on my front door wreath, I tried this online tutorial and still couldn't figure it out! Any tips on bow making?

Have you checked out Kourtney Kardashian's blog? It's filled with loads of eye candy. Kourtney's style is very glam and leopard obsessed (a girl after my own heart) and I am liking her more these days.

It is rumored that Kate will be wearing British Wedding designer Bruce Oldfield. While browsing his collection online of wedding gowns, I must say that I was underwhelmed. I would assume he'd make a gown that would be appropriate for the future Queen of England but still. What do you think?

On to my family, this past weekend was a blast. We ventured up to Lake Tahoe and skied the day away on Saturday. Sunday was our Christmas with the hubs family. This was the first year we did Secret Santa for the adults. While it saved us money it wasn't as fun as I had hoped although I believe this will be the new trend. Overall, we had such a great time, so much so, that me and the boys (Jake & Ryan) spent all day Monday recovering. Today was busy, as I rushed to the mall and shopped the morning away.

Luckily Jake was at preschool so I only had Ryan with me.

My family starts arriving this Friday morning for Christmas so it is a hectic week.
